This isn't some grand country estate with manicured lawns - it's a proper Tudor manor house surrounded by water, looking rather like someone plucked it straight from a fairy tale and left it exactly as is. The National Trust property near Warwick is wonderfully unpretentious, a working home rather than a museum piece, which makes wandering through its rooms feel genuinely intimate.

Inside, the house reveals itself slowly. Narrow corridors, low ceilings, a chapel hidden away where Catholic priests once sheltered during the Reformation - there's real history woven into the fabric rather than displayed behind ropes. The kitchens are particularly good, all copper pans and period detail. Allow a solid two hours to explore properly without feeling rushed.

This works best for history enthusiasts and anyone who prefers substance over spectacle. Kids might find it interesting for an hour, though there's nothing interactive to keep them entertained if they're young. The grounds reward a wander, though they're modest compared to some Trust properties.

If you're camping at nearby Mousley House Farm or Gate Farm, Baddesley Clinton makes an excellent morning or afternoon outing - Warwick's only four miles away, so you could easily combine it with the castle if you're making a proper day of it. Go midweek if possible; weekends draw coach parties and the narrow rooms feel cramped. The house closes for winter, so plan accordingly.
