National Trust - Bolberry Down

The walk up to Bolberry Down rewards you with views that stretch across the South Devon coast - the kind of perspective that makes the climb worthwhile. This National Trust-owned stretch of clifftop near Kingsbridge is less fussed over than some of their more famous properties, which means you'll often have the place mostly to yourself.

What you're looking at is proper coastal moorland, the sort of rough, windswept terrain that feels genuinely remote despite being easily accessible from the car park. The grassland rolls down towards dramatic cliffs, and on a clear day the visibility is excellent. There's a standing stone up here too - Bronze Age, if the local history is accurate - which adds a bit of ancient mystery to the place.

For walkers, it's the main draw. The paths are decent enough, though they can get boggy in wet weather, so appropriate footwear matters. You're looking at a solid two to three hours if you want to do a proper circuit and take time absorbing the views. Families with younger kids might find the exposed cliff edges a bit nerve-wracking, though older children who enjoy a genuine coastal walk will get plenty out of it.

It's free to access, and there's no complicated booking situation. The nearby Karrageen Caravan Park sits just half a mile away, making this an obvious add-on to a longer South Devon coast trip. Pair it with walks around the other coastal spots in the area - you're well positioned for a proper coastal rambling week. Early morning visits are best if you want solitude and clearer light for photographs.
