National Trust Dockey Wood

The National Trust owns a fair chunk of woodland round Berkhamsted, and Dockey Wood is one of those places locals know well but visitors often miss entirely. It's proper woodland - the kind with a good mix of beech and oak, decent paths that don't require hiking boots, and enough space that you won't feel crowded even on a sunny weekend.

What you get here is straightforward: a walk through mature trees, some lovely clearings where the light comes through properly, and the kind of peace that's increasingly hard to find near London. There's no visitor centre, no café, no interpretive boards explaining which beetle lives where. It's just trees and paths. Some people will find that refreshing. Others might want more structure.

Families with young kids will manage fine on the main paths, though there's nothing specifically built for them - no playground, no adventure trail. If your children are the type who get excited by climbing fallen logs and exploring under bracken, they'll have a good time. Walkers and anyone after a decent thirty-minute stroll through proper woodland should head here without hesitation.

Camping in the area is well served. Norcott Campsite and Woodlands Caravan are both close enough that you could base yourself there and visit Dockey Wood as part of a broader explore of the Chilterns. The site appears to be free access as National Trust land typically is, though it's worth checking before you head over. Go early on weekday mornings if you want it quieter.
