National Trust - Hatfield Forest

Hatfield Forest is one of those rare places where you're walking through something genuinely old - we're talking medieval hunting forest, largely unchanged since the 1200s. The National Trust runs it now, and what you get is 1,049 acres of ancient woodland, open grassland, and a proper working landscape that feels less like a manicured attraction and more like you've stumbled into someone's well-kept back garden.

The walk around the lake is the thing most people do, and rightly so - it's gentle, takes about an hour at an easy pace, and the water reflects the trees nicely without being showy about it. There's a network of trails through the woods if you want to push further, but the forest itself is the draw rather than any single viewpoint. You'll see pollarded trees (ancient ones, still being managed the old way), wildflower meadows depending on season, and the occasional deer if you're lucky.

Historically minded visitors will find plenty to chew on - the forest has been shaped by centuries of commoners' rights, coppicing, and royal hunting. It's the sort of place that rewards a slow wander rather than a quick tick-off.

Based near Dunmow, it pairs well with a stay at Dairymeade Farm Glamping if you want countryside without roughing it too much. Free to enter for National Trust members; there's a car park charge for non-members. Allow two to three hours minimum, longer if you're the lingering type. Best in spring or early autumn when the light is right and you're not fighting summer crowds.
