National Trust - Kyson Hill

The River Deben curves through Kyson Hill like it's got all the time in the world, and honestly, so should you when you visit this National Trust reserve just east of Woodbridge. It's a proper slice of Suffolk riverside - woodland slopes dropping down to water meadows, with paths that let you wander through the lot without too much faffing about.

You'll find yourself on trails that twist through ancient woodland, then open out onto grassland where the river sprawls below. The views aren't dramatic - no cliff edges or sweeping vistas - but they're the quiet kind that work on you. Birdwatchers come here regularly enough, and there's good reason: the marshland attracts waders and wildfowl depending on season. The walking itself is straightforward, though some bits get muddy after rain, which is all part of the appeal if you've got proper boots on.

It works particularly well for families after a park holiday at Moon & Sixpence or Woodbridge Glamping - both are barely a mile away - because you can do an hour's walk without needing to commit to a full day out. History types will appreciate that the woodland's been here for centuries, shaping the landscape the way it has. Allow a couple of hours if you want to explore both sides of the reserve properly.
