National Trust - Limpsfield Common

Limpsfield Common sprawls across 160 acres of proper Surrey countryside, the sort of place where you can actually breathe. It's National Trust-managed woodland and open grassland rolled together - ancient commons land that's stayed largely unchanged while everything around it got built up. You're walking through a mix of birch scrub, heathland, and the occasional clearing where you can actually see the sky.

The footpath network is excellent. Most people do a circuit from the car park near Warlingham - takes about an hour at a comfortable pace, longer if you're the type to stop and identify every wildflower. Spring's best if you want bluebells; late summer's when you'll see the heathland at its peak. There are benches in sensible spots, though nothing fancy.

It's genuinely good for families with older kids and proper walkers. Younger children might find it a bit samey after forty minutes - there's no playground, no selling ice cream, none of that. But if you're staying at Milberry Green Meadows just down the road, it's an easy morning or afternoon walk without needing the car. The terrain's mostly gentle with some proper muddy bits that dry out reasonably fast.

Admission's free - it's open access National Trust land. No facilities on site, so bring water. The nearest proper facilities are back in Warlingham. It won't set your world on fire, but it's solid woodland walking on genuine historical common land, and that matters.
