National Trust - Paycocke's House and Garden

Step into a timber-framed merchant's house and you're basically walking straight into the 15th century. Paycocke's House near Coggeshall - just east of Colchester - is one of those rare places where the National Trust has genuinely left things alone rather than turning them into some gleaming showpiece. The wood panelling is original. The plasterwork is the real deal. You get a proper sense of how a wealthy cloth merchant lived when that trade actually meant something.

The garden's modest but pleasant enough - nothing that'll knock your socks off, but it's a decent spot to sit after poking around the rooms upstairs. The house itself is the draw here, and it rewards close looking. Details matter: the carved beams, the merchant's mark, the way rooms connect. You're talking maybe ninety minutes maximum if you're thorough, forty if you just want the quick tour.

Families with kids over about nine will find it interesting; younger ones might fidget. Serious history types and anyone into domestic architecture will absolutely get their money's worth. If you're based at Teybrook Orchard or Swallows Field Glamping Pods - both within easy reach - it works well as a half-morning outing before heading back to the park for lunch.
