National Trust - Sizergh

A proper medieval fortress dressed up as a country house, Sizergh sits just south of Kendal with the kind of presence that makes you understand why the National Trust bothers protecting the place. The pele tower - that's the defensive keep at its heart - dates back to 1340, which means it was already centuries old when the rest of the house got added on during the Tudor period. Inside, you'll find rooms crammed with period furniture, portraits, and the sort of wood panelling that makes you feel like you're trespassing in someone's very important family home.

Walkers and history types will find plenty to occupy an afternoon. The grounds include woodland trails and a limestone pavement garden that's genuinely interesting if you're into native plants - the rock garden doesn't mess about. Budget a solid two to three hours if you want to see both house and gardens properly. Families with younger children might find the interior a bit stuffy after the first hour, but the gardens give them room to breathe.

It's a paid attraction run by the National Trust, so membership helps if you're planning a longer Cumbrian trip. From Kendal Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, less than a mile away, you could be here in five minutes. Sizergh works well as a morning stop before heading toward Windermere or deeper into the Lakes - it's got enough substance to justify the detour without eating your whole day.
