About National Trust - Stackpole

The dunes and lakes here are proper wild - Stackpole's 2,400 acres feel genuinely remote despite being just outside Pembroke. You've got eight interconnected lakes created by old mill ponds, reed beds thick with bitterns and marsh harriers, and a cracking stretch of sand dune system that runs down to Bosherston Beach. Most people come for the walking, and fair enough - there are several circular routes ranging from an easy stroll around the lakes to proper coastal hikes. The beach walk itself is excellent, threading past limestone cliffs and through the dunes.

This is National Trust land, so it's free to access and open year-round. Bring binoculars if you're into birds - the wetland habitat attracts serious numbers, especially in winter and during migration season. Families will enjoy the easier lake loops, though toddlers might struggle with some of the rougher beach paths. History buffs get a bonus: there's a ruined medieval castle on site and the remains of Stackpole Quay.

Allow two to three hours minimum if you want to do one of the main circular walks. The car park at Bosherston (nearest village) fills up quickly on summer weekends, so go early or visit out of season. All the local campsites - Sky Meadow Glamping, Freshwater East, and Parke Farm among them - sit within a couple of miles, making this an obvious half-day venture from a Pembrokeshire base. It's the kind of place where the weather matters; a crisp autumn morning with low light across the water beats a grey summer afternoon. Skip it if you're after manicured gardens or visitor facilities - this is raw coastal habitat, and that's precisely what makes it worth the trip.
