National Trust - Sutton Lane Meadows

The meadows stretch along Sutton Lane just outside Chippenham, and they're a proper haven if you're after a proper walk without the National Trust crowds that descend on the grander properties. What you get here is roughly 40 acres of unmanicured grassland and wildflower meadows - the kind of place where the appeal is in the doing rather than the gawping.

It's manageable on foot, taking maybe 45 minutes to loop round depending on how often you stop to identify what's actually blooming. Spring brings the early stuff; summer turns it into a riot of colour that honestly surprised me given how modest the site feels on arrival. Butterflies work the flowers properly during July and August. You're looking at open countryside here, though - no benches, no cafe, no facilities to speak of. Bring water.

Walkers will get the most from this. Not a challenge, but satisfying for anyone who wants green space that isn't manicured into submission. Families with younger kids might find 20 minutes is plenty. History buffs won't find much to grip them beyond the fact it's preserved as a wildflower site.

It's free, and the location - just a couple of miles from Chippenham - makes it a decent half-hour detour if you're staying at The Moors Campsite or Roe Deer Fields nearby. Don't arrive expecting grandeur. Arrive expecting peace and a decent chance of spotting something with wings. That's what you'll get.
