National Trust - Tattershall Castle

You'll spot the red brick tower from the road long before you reach the gates - that's Tattershall Castle, a proper medieval statement sitting alone in the Lincolnshire flatlands near Lincoln. Built in 1430 by Ralph, Lord Cromwell, it's essentially a five-storey keep surrounded by moats and earthworks, and stepping inside feels like walking into a very serious display of 15th-century ambition.

The tower itself is the main draw. You can climb the narrow spiral staircases (they're steep, fair warning) to reach the top, where views across the fens stretch for miles - on a clear day you'll see why someone wanted to show off their wealth up here. Each level has its own character: vaulted chambers, fireplaces, windows that grow larger as you ascend, all pointing to the original luxury inside. The keep's been restored enough to feel safe but retains enough atmosphere that you're genuinely aware you're in something old.

History buffs will spend a good couple of hours here, though families with younger kids might find an hour sufficient unless they're properly into castles. Walkers do well too - the moat walk around the outside is pleasant, and it's a natural stopping point on a wider ramble across the local countryside.

The castle sits barely a mile from Tattershall Lakes Country Park, making it an easy add-on to a caravan or camping holiday in the area.
