National Trust - Wellbrook Beetling Mill

The thunderous clang of metal on linen echoes through this working mill just outside Cookstown, and it's genuinely hypnotic. Wellbrook Beetling Mill is one of the last of its kind in Ireland - a place where linen was literally hammered into submission by wooden beetles, turning rough cloth into something lustrous and ready to wear. You walk through a proper industrial space, all timber beams and water wheels, watching demonstrations of a process that would have deafened workers back in the day. The whole operation ran on the River Strule's power, and that engineering alone is worth your attention. History enthusiasts will find themselves properly absorbed here - it's not sanitised, not prettified. The building speaks for itself. Allow a good 90 minutes if you're the type to ask questions and really watch the demonstration. An hour's fine if you just want the quick tour. Families with younger kids might find it a touch heavy-going; teenagers with any curiosity about industrial heritage will get far more from it. Free entry is a genuine gift from the National Trust. The location works brilliantly alongside a stay at Sperrinview Glamping just down the road - close enough for a morning visit before exploring the Sperrins proper. Go when the mill's actually operating if you can manage it; seeing those beetles in action beats photographs every time.
