Oughtmore

You'll need decent legs and a decent map to find Oughtmore properly - it's not the sort of peak that announces itself. Rising above the Sperrins just south of Cookstown, this moorland walk rewards you with proper 360-degree views across Mid Ulster once you've done the graft. The terrain is rough underfoot, boggy in places, and there's precious little shelter, so don't bother if the weather's closing in.

This is walkers' territory first and foremost. The views out towards Lough Neagh and across the Tyrone hills are genuinely good, though the peak itself is moorland rather than dramatic - no dramatic crags or sudden reveals. Count on two to three hours for a decent circuit, depending on your route. It's free to walk, obviously, and there's no facilities up there whatsoever.

Family groups with young kids will get tired of it quickly. Teenagers who like a proper hike, though, or anyone keen on the less-crowded Sperrins peaks, should slot this into their itinerary. The walking season runs March through October really - winter bog is grim.

If you're based at Sperrinview Glamping just down the road, this becomes a natural half-day outing alongside exploring the broader Sperrins range. It's not a major attraction, but it's the sort of walk that reminds you why people bother with Northern Ireland's hills in the first place.
