You'll find New Gorse just outside St. Neots, a proper working forest that feels worlds away from the Cambridgeshire flatlands. It's not the kind of place with visitor centres or manicured paths - this is the real thing, all dense woodland and forest tracks where you can actually lose yourself for an afternoon.

The forest works for serious walkers and families alike, though I'd warn parents that it's more rugged than a country park stroll. There's genuine woodland here - tall conifers mixed with broadleaves, which makes for decent shade even on muggy summer days. You're not paying admission and there's no faffing about with opening hours; you just turn up and walk. Plan on two to three hours minimum if you want to see anything worthwhile, though you can do shorter loops depending on your energy.

It's the kind of place that rewards you if you actually explore rather than just march straight through. The paths aren't signposted to death, which keeps it feeling wild, but it also means you need decent navigation skills or at least a map on your phone.

If you're staying at St. Neots Camping and Caravanning Club Site just down the road, this is golden - genuinely close enough for a morning walk before heading elsewhere. Cambridgeshire Lakes is a bit further out but still reasonable. New Gorse slots nicely into a Cambridgeshire break if you want actual woodland rather than the endless flat fields the county's known for.
