New Salt Marsh

The salt marshes east of Maldon are the real Essex - flat, moody, and surprisingly absorbing if you know what you're looking at. New Salt Marsh sits in that watery landscape where the land can't quite decide if it's solid or surrendering to the tides, and walking out here gives you a proper sense of why this corner of England has always felt a bit separate from the rest.

It's not a spectacle in the traditional sense. There's no visitor centre, no café, no marked trails with information boards. What you get instead is space, silence, and the kind of light that changes everything depending on the weather. Birdwatchers will have the best of it - the marsh supports waders, wildfowl, and raptors throughout the year, and spring and autumn migrations bring real variety. Walkers enjoy it too, though the paths can be muddy and navigation isn't always obvious, so an Ordnance Survey map or a GPS app is essential.

Allow a couple of hours for a decent explore. Sunrise or late afternoon suits the mood better than midday. It's free to wander, though you'll need to respect any private land boundaries.
