Newbiggin by the sea beach

The beach at Newbiggin curves along the Northumberland coast like a proper invitation to get your boots muddy. This is a working nature reserve, not a manicured bathing spot - you'll find rock pools teaming with starfish and sea anemones, stretches of sand that shift with the seasons, and a distinctive Victorian pier jutting out like a finger pointing at Scotland.

Walkers come here seriously. The coastal path stretches for miles in both directions, and birdwatchers camp out with binoculars hoping to spot overwintering species or migrating waders depending on the season. Families with young kids will spend a solid two hours turning over rocks and filling buckets. Older children might find it a bit samey after that.

Access is straightforward - the beach is free and you can turn up whenever you fancy. There's a promenade with the usual seafront amenities if you need chips or a cuppa. Allow at least ninety minutes if you're doing the rock pool thing properly, longer if you're walking the full coastal stretch.

Both Parkdean Resorts Church Point and Sandy Bay holiday parks sit within spitting distance - less than a mile away - making this an excellent half-day activity when the weather turns temperamental. Golden Sands is only marginally further at 3.7 miles. The reserve sits right on the edge of town, so you're not battling traffic or complicated navigation. Genuinely good for mixing beach time with proper walking.
