Newbiggin Rocket House

The Rocket House sits right on Newbiggin-by-the-Sea's seafront, a modest brick building that tells the story of William Bickford and his groundbreaking rocket experiments. Bickford invented the safety fuse in the 1830s - a fuse that could be detonated reliably and safely, which revolutionised mining and construction across the world. The museum itself is small and focused, walking you through his life and work with genuine artifacts and explanations of the science.

It's the kind of place that works brilliantly if you're genuinely interested in Victorian engineering or industrial history. Kids under twelve might find it a bit dry unless they're the curious type. Most visitors spend 45 minutes to an hour here; it doesn't sprawl. Even better if you're at Golden Sands over in Cresswell way; it's only a few miles, and you can combine it with a proper walk along the Northumberland coast.
