About Newchurch Hill
This is a straightforward hill walk rather than a technical climb. The path is well-trodden and suits families with older kids and anyone after a solid afternoon walk without the scramble. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Borders Hideaway or Heart of the Wye Glamping are both under five miles away - it makes an easy outing. Hay-on-Wye Caravan Park, a few miles further on, would also work as a base.
Timing matters here. Go early if you want to avoid the worst of the wind, and bring a map because signage is sparse once you're up there. The hill itself is free to walk - no gates or fees - though you'll need to be respectful of farmland and close any gates behind you. Summer's nicest, but even in winter the visibility can be excellent. It won't keep you occupied for a full day trip on its own, but combined with a wander around nearby Hay-on-Wye or a drive through the valley, it slots in perfectly. Worth doing if you're in the area, though nothing you'll regret missing.
