Newhouse Wood

Walking into Newhouse Wood feels like stepping back several centuries. This Herefordshire forest sits just outside Hereford and offers proper woodland - the kind where you can actually lose yourself for an hour or two without bumping into car parks and visitor centres. The trees are mature, the paths are reasonably well-maintained, and it's genuinely quiet even on weekends.

It's the sort of place that works for families with older kids who don't need constant entertainment, or for anyone after a straightforward woodland walk without the crowds you'd get at more famous forest beauty spots. The canopy is dense enough to feel like proper countryside, though it's close enough to town that you're never more than a short drive from Hereford if you need supplies or a decent lunch.

You can wander for as little as 30 minutes or stretch it to a couple of hours depending on which paths you follow - none of it is particularly demanding. There's no café, no facilities that I could find, so come prepared. Bring water, wear decent shoes, and don't expect signposting that would win prizes. The wood itself is free to access, which keeps it feeling refreshingly uncommercial.

If you're staying at one of the nearby glamping spots - White House on Wye is barely a mile away, or Caplor Glamping just over three miles - it's a solid option for a morning or afternoon jaunt. Nothing spectacular, but sometimes that's exactly what you want from a forest walk.
