Newlands Park

Newlands Park is Cheltenham's main cricket and sports ground, a proper working venue that hosts Gloucestershire County Cricket Club matches throughout the summer season. If you're camping nearby - and there are several sites within spitting distance, including the Cheltenham Racecourse Caravan Club just a mile away - it's worth timing a visit around a match day.

The ground itself has genuine character. You get decent sightlines from most angles, the atmosphere on county match days is genuinely friendly rather than stuffy, and there's something satisfying about watching cricket at a venue where the game still feels local. It's not glamorous - the facilities are functional rather than fancy - but that's rather the point.

For families with kids who actually enjoy cricket, or teenagers keen to see county-level play without the formality of Lord's, this works well. A full day ticket won't break the bank, and you can easily duck out after lunch if attention spans wane. The ground sits just outside Cheltenham proper, so it's accessible from town but doesn't feel wedged into urban sprawl.

Realistic expectations matter here. This isn't a tourist attraction in the conventional sense - you're coming for cricket, not to gawp at architecture or snap photos. Go on a warm July afternoon when there's a decent crowd, grab a beer, settle in. If you're staying at Briarfields or one of the other touring parks in the area, it's genuinely convenient. Off-season, there's frankly little reason to visit.
