Newlays Plantation

Walk into Newlays Plantation and you're immediately swallowed by tall conifers and the kind of quiet you only find in proper woodland. It's a straightforward forest near Dunmow - no fancy visitor centre or themed trails, just trees, paths, and the occasional birdsong to remind you there's life beyond the car park.

The plantation feels older than it probably is, all dense and serious. You can lose an hour here without trying, wandering between the stands of pine and spruce. It's brilliant for walkers who want fresh air without the National Trust crowds, and genuinely good for clearing your head if you've had one of those weeks. Kids will find it satisfying rather than thrilling - stick-collecting, log-hopping, the usual woodland stuff.

There's not much here in terms of facilities or structure, which is either its greatest strength or its main drawback depending on what you're after. No playground, no café, no interpretive boards. Just forest. You'll want decent boots if it's been wet, and frankly a map helps because the paths loop in ways that aren't always obvious.

It's free to access and free of the usual heritage tourism machinery. Go if you actually like woods. Skip it if you need entertainment.
