Nick Pot

The entrance to Nick Pot doesn't look like much at first - just a modest opening in the fell side near Lancaster, easy to miss if you're not paying attention. But step through and you're into proper caving territory, with narrow passages that demand you crouch and shuffle through sections that feel genuinely claustrophobic. The cave system itself is relatively short, nothing like the sprawling networks you get elsewhere in the Pennines, but it's the squeeze factor that makes it memorable.

This is a trip for people who actually enjoy being underground in tight spaces. Families with older kids who fancy a bit of adventure will get a kick out of it, though younger ones might find it intimidating. Walkers doing the rounds of the local fells often pop in as a novelty break rather than a destination in itself. You'll want proper torches - headtorches are essential, not optional - and clothes you don't mind getting muddy. The ground can be damp and uneven.

Nick Pot is free to enter, though the real time commitment is probably 30-45 minutes depending on how cautious you are with the tight bits. Best visited in drier months when the water levels are lower. If you're camped at Orcaber Farm or Primrose Glamping Pods, it's a reasonable drive over to explore, though you'd honestly want to pair it with proper fell walking or other cave visits in the area to justify the trip. On its own, it's more of a 'did that' than a proper day out.
