Nineteen Acre Plantation

A proper woodland walk without the crowds - that's what Nineteen Acre Plantation delivers just outside Yeovil. It's a straightforward forest reserve, nothing fancy, but the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. The trees create a decent canopy, paths are manageable underfoot, and there's a genuine sense of being away from it all despite being barely four miles from town.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a destination that'll keep you entertained for eight hours, but a solid hour or ninety minutes works perfectly if you're staying at Long Hazel Park nearby and fancy a morning stretch before heading elsewhere. Families with young kids might find it a touch dull after half an hour unless they're into spotting birds or collecting leaves.

The woodland's best visited when it's not raining - paths can get boggy - and early morning or weekday afternoons tend to be quieter than weekends. Free to access as far as I can tell, which makes it a no-brainer add-on to a caravan holiday in the area.

Don't expect dramatic viewpoints or facilities here. What you get is peace, a bit of exercise, and the kind of restful greenery that clears your head after a few days of sightseeing. It slots nicely into a broader Somerset itinerary without demanding much planning or time.
