Northleigh Plantation

Northleigh Plantation is a proper working forest just outside Barnstaple where you can actually walk among the trees without feeling like you're in some over-managed theme park version of nature. It's genuine woodland - the kind where you might spot deer if you're lucky, and the only noise is branches underfoot and birds doing their thing overhead.

The main draw here is straightforward: miles of walking trails that wind through established forest, with enough variety to keep things interesting whether you're after a gentle thirty-minute stroll or something longer. The paths are well-trodden but not manicured to within an inch of their lives, which means it feels like actual countryside rather than a municipal park. In autumn the colours are decent, spring brings wildflowers along the edges, and honestly even winter has its appeal when the place is quieter.

This works best for walkers and families who want to burn off some energy without overthinking it. Bring proper shoes - the ground gets boggy in places. Allow at least ninety minutes if you want to see anything of substance; two hours if you're meandering.

It's free to access and sits nicely within reach of several holiday parks. HARTA Retreat and Longlands both offer proper base camps for a woodland-heavy break, and Stowford Farm Meadows gives you a good mix if you want forest walks one day and something more structured the next. The forest works as a breathing space between busier Barnstaple attractions rather than a day-long destination on its own.
