Market day transforms this North Devon town into something properly special. Barnstaple's Tuesday and Friday markets have been drawing crowds since 1300-odd, and the buzz around the Georgian Pannier Market feels genuinely authentic rather than touristy. The narrow streets radiating out from the market square tell stories of wool merchants and ship builders, when this was one of England's most important ports.

The River Taw curves lazily through town, crossed by the medieval Long Bridge - all sixteen arches of it. From here you can see why Barnstaple became such a trading hub. Ships once sailed right up to the town quay, bringing tobacco from the Americas and taking Devon wool to Europe. These days it's more likely to be pleasure boats, but the maritime feel lingers.

Wander beyond the town centre and you'll find proper countryside within walking distance. Hammetts Park and Snapper Woods make for decent afternoon strolls, while the ancient Church of St John the Baptist rewards a quick visit - its twisted spire is a local landmark. Miller's Wood and Raleigh Wood offer longer walks if you fancy stretching your legs properly.

Getting here couldn't be simpler - the A361 North Devon Link Road connects Barnstaple directly to the M5, making it accessible without the usual Devon lane drama. The railway station serves the scenic Tarka Line to Exeter, though services aren't frequent.

Basing yourself at one of the nearby parks makes perfect sense for exploring North Devon's coast and countryside. You're fifteen minutes from golden beaches at Croyde and Woolacombe, yet still close enough to nip into town for supplies or a proper pub lunch. The surrounding area is peppered with walking trails through ancient woodland like Northleigh Plantation and Youlston Park - ideal for working off those hearty Devon breakfasts.
