Northmoor Plantation

The woodland around Northmoor Plantation near Bideford is properly rewarding if you're after a proper walk without the crowds that plague the big tourist traps. It's a working forest, so you're not getting manicured paths and information boards - just trees, forest floor, and the kind of quiet that makes you remember why you drove west in the first place.

You can spend a couple of hours wandering through here, following whatever route takes your fancy. The mix of conifer and broadleaf keeps things visually interesting, and there's genuine peace to be found among the older trees. It's excellent for families with kids old enough to manage uneven ground, and proper walkers will appreciate the lack of other people. Dogs love it too.

Timing-wise, spring and early summer are best - the light filters through the canopy properly then, and you won't be battling through boggy patches. Winter's fine if you don't mind damp. Allow two to three hours depending on how far you fancy roaming.

It works well as part of a wider North Devon exploration. You're close enough to Bideford itself for lunch or supplies, and if you're staying at Atlantic Horizons or Roeys Retreat nearby, it makes an ideal morning activity before heading elsewhere. The plantation doesn't demand a full day - it's more the sort of place that fits naturally into a broader holiday, especially if you're already walking the coastal paths or exploring Exmoor.
