Northstowe Western Park

The Western Park at Northstowe is a proper working nature reserve just outside Cambridge, and it's one of those places that rewards you for actually getting off the main drag. You're looking at restored wetland and grassland habitats - the kind of space that's been deliberately rewilded rather than left to chance. Birds love it here. Lapwings, redshank, and various warblers depending on the season, plus the usual suspects like herons stalking the reed beds.

It's best suited to patient observers and walkers who don't need constant action. Families with older kids who can manage a proper nature walk will get something out of it, though the younger ones might find it slow-going. There's no visitor centre to write home about - this is about the habitat itself, not the frills.

Access and timings aren't widely advertised, which is typical for Cambridgeshire reserves. Most are free, and most open dawn to dusk, but check ahead before you head out. Give yourself a couple of hours if you're doing the full circuit with binoculars and a bird book.

If you're staying at Cuckoo Fen Campsite or Hempsall Farm Vegan Glamping - both within three miles - this slot nicely into a broader wetland exploration. You could couple it with a Cambridge city visit to break up the stay. Not a must-do, but if you're already in the area and weather's decent, the walk is well worth an afternoon.
