Swavesey Lake

Twenty minutes north of Cambridge, this former gravel pit has grown into something properly special for anyone who enjoys lakeside walks without the crowds. The water stretches out in an irregular shape, fringed by reeds and young willows that rustle in the Fenland breeze.

Fishing seems to be the main draw here - you'll spot anglers dotted around the banks most days, after carp and roach. But it's equally good for a gentle stroll, especially if you're staying at one of the nearby sites like Cuckoo Fen Campsite or Crystal Lakes Leisure. The path around the perimeter isn't complete, mind you, so don't expect a full circuit.

Birds love it here. Expect to see herons standing stock-still in the shallows, plus the usual suspects - coots, moorhens, and if you're lucky, a kingfisher streaking past in a flash of blue. Early morning is best for wildlife, before the dog walkers arrive.

Kids might find it a bit tame unless they're keen on pond-dipping or bird spotting. There's no playground or cafe, just the lake and surrounding grassland. Perfect for a peaceful hour or two, but probably not an all-day destination unless you're planning to fish. The lack of facilities means it stays wonderfully quiet - exactly what some visitors to this part of Cambridgeshire are after.
