Northwood Copse

The woodland walk through Northwood Copse comes as a proper relief if you've spent the morning trudging around Newbury town centre. It's a modest stretch of forest - nothing dramatic - but the paths are decent and it fills a couple of hours without fuss.

You'll find beech and oak mainly, with enough undergrowth to make it feel like actual woodland rather than a mowed park. The paths fork pleasantly enough, so you can do a quick loop or extend it if the mood takes. In spring the bluebells show up, which is worth timing your visit for if you can. Summer's fine too, though it gets warm and close under the canopy on humid days.

Walkers will get the most from this - it's straightforward, no scrambling or technical bits, just a chance to breathe properly away from the town. Kids won't complain, though they might lose interest after an hour unless they're the type to hunt for bugs and build stick shelters. The forest floor is soft from years of fallen leaves, which is genuinely pleasant underfoot.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so come prepared. It slots in nicely alongside Cherry Bird Country Park or Hollington Park Glamping if you're staying in the area for a longer break - combine it with a morning here and you've still got the afternoon free for other things. Worth the drive if you're passing through West Berkshire, but don't make a special trip just for this.
