Nutberry Moss

The forest floor at Nutberry Moss is soft underfoot, mossy in places, and the trees crowd in close enough that you feel properly removed from the world. It's a working woodland rather than a manicured nature reserve, which means it has character - gnarled oaks, dense conifers, and the kind of quiet that only happens when you're miles from traffic.

Walkers will find this worthwhile. The paths wind through genuine forest rather than looping back on themselves every five minutes, and there's something satisfying about that. You can easily spend two hours here without feeling rushed, though an hour does the job if you're short on time. The moss gives the place its name and its dampish feel - bring proper boots, not trainers.

It's not a destination that'll keep very small children entertained for long. Older kids who like getting properly into the woods, spotting wildlife, or just mucking about in nature will do better. There are no facilities to speak of, so come prepared.

It's not dramatic or showy, but it's the sort of place that reminds you why you came to the Lake District in the first place - actual woodland where you can think straight and breathe properly.
