Oakley Wood - WWT

Oakley Wood is a Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust reserve tucked just outside Warwick, and it's the sort of place that rewards patience rather than instant gratification. You're here to watch birds - waders, wildfowl, the occasional rarity if you time it right - so bring binoculars and reasonable expectations. The wetland habitat itself is what does the work; you just need to stay quiet and let it happen.

The woodland paths are gentle enough, threading through scrub and reedbeds where you've got actual chances of spotting something. Winters are best if you're after larger numbers - grebes, pintail, the occasional whooper swan pushing down from Iceland. Spring and autumn migrants keep things interesting year-round. This isn't Slimbridge or even some of the bigger WWT sites; it's smaller, more intimate, and frankly better if you know what you're looking at.

Birdwatchers and patient families will get the most from it. Young children expecting bright birds and quick action will struggle after twenty minutes. The reserve is free to explore - WWT doesn't charge at all of their sites - and you can easily spend two to three hours if you're serious about it, or knock it out in an hour for a casual wander.

If you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks around Warwick - Avon Riverside is closest at 2.5 miles - Oakley Wood makes a solid morning before heading into Warwick itself or exploring further afield. It's not a destination in itself, but as part of a broader Warwickshire trip it slots in perfectly.
