Ogof y Ffos

Wild winds whip across the headland before you descend into this coastal cave system, one of Pembrokeshire's more obscure underground attractions. Ogof y Ffos translates roughly as 'Ditch Cave', which doesn't sound particularly inspiring until you're actually standing at its entrance watching the sea crash below.

Cavers and geology enthusiasts will find the most to appreciate here - this isn't a show cave with handrails and lighting, but rather a proper exploration requiring torches and sturdy footwear. The limestone formations are impressive enough, though you'll need to know what you're looking at to get the full benefit.

Families with young children should probably give this one a miss. The approach can be tricky in wet weather, and there's precious little to hold the attention of anyone not fascinated by rock formations. Serious walkers doing the coast path will find it a worthy detour, particularly if the weather's turned and you fancy ducking out of the wind for half an hour.

From Haverfordwest, it's a reasonable drive to the coast, and you're well-placed for several camping options. Caerfai Bay Caravan & Tent Park sits closest to the action, while Newgale Campsite offers a larger base for exploring this stretch of the Pembrokeshire Coast. Allow an hour if you're just having a quick look, longer if you're planning proper exploration.
