Oidgerton Wood

Oidgerton Wood sits on the outskirts of Callington, a proper stretch of Cornish woodland that doesn't make it onto many tourist radars. The paths wind through dense trees - oak and beech mostly - with the occasional clearing where you can actually see sky. It's the kind of place where you go to walk rather than to be entertained, which means it works best for people who actually enjoy forests.

The terrain is fairly gentle, nothing that'll knacker you within twenty minutes, though it can get muddy after rain. Most folk allow an hour to ninety minutes depending on which trails you take. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so come prepared. The woodland is genuinely peaceful - that's its whole appeal - and it's free to access, which is just how it should be.

It suits walkers far more than families with young children, unless your kids are the type who can entertain themselves spotting birds and insects. If you're staying at Sunnyside Eco Glamping just down the road, it's an easy morning circuit before breakfast. Woodovis Holiday Park is a bit further out but still within easy striking distance. Both are excellent bases if you want woodland walking without the crowds you'd get at better-known spots. Oidgerton won't give you Instagram moments or thrills, but it will give you time among the trees, which is exactly what it promises.
