Old Orchard Copse

A proper woodland walk rather than a tourist trap, Old Orchard Copse sits just outside Newbury and delivers exactly what it promises: ancient trees, quiet paths, and the sort of peace you've forgotten exists near a market town. The forest floor is thick with leaf litter, the canopy dense enough to keep things cool even on warm days, and there's a genuine sense of stepping back into Hampshire's older landscape.

Walkers will get more from this than families with young kids, though teenagers who aren't phone-obsessed tend to find it atmospheric. Winter's actually better than summer when the deciduous canopy gets heavy and claustrophobic. It's free and you can arrive whenever suits you.

The nearby glamping at Hollington Park and the campsite at Bishops Green Farm both make decent bases for exploring this corner of Hampshire. Use Old Orchard Copse as a morning walk before heading to bigger attractions, rather than as a day-trip destination on its own. It's the sort of place locals know and visitors miss - which is exactly why it's worth finding.
