Old Pasture Park

Old Pasture Park sits just outside York, and it's one of those spots that rewards a proper wander rather than a quick tick-off. It's a working landscape more than a manicured attraction - rolling grassland punctuated by trees, with paths that loop through what feels like genuine countryside despite being minutes from the city centre.

The park works best for walkers who appreciate understated beauty. You won't find any cafes, gift shops, or interpretation boards here - it's just the ground beneath your feet and whatever birds happen to be about. Plan on an hour or two depending on how much of the wider area you want to cover. Families with younger kids might find it a bit thin on obvious things to do, though older children who enjoy a proper ramble will get on fine.

It's free to access, which is proper value. The nearest approach is from York itself, making it an easy half-day loop if you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Cawood Park or York South Ltd, both excellent bases for exploring the region.

Go when the grass has just been cut and the light's low - early morning or late afternoon. Winter's actually lovely here when everything's bare and you can see the shape of the land properly. Spring brings the wildflowers out in patches, which is worth timing a visit around if you can.
