Old Windmill

Climbing the gentle slope above Much Wenlock, this crumbling stone tower rewards the short walk with proper views across the Shropshire countryside. What remains of the old windmill isn't much to look at close up - just weathered limestone walls and an absent roof - but position yourself right and you'll understand why someone built here centuries ago.

The panorama takes in the rolling farmland that defines this corner of Shropshire, with the Wenlock Edge limestone escarpment cutting a dramatic line across the horizon. On clear days, you can pick out Much Wenlock's abbey ruins below and trace the network of hedgerows and ancient field boundaries that pattern the landscape like a medieval map.

Walkers and photographers will get the most from this spot, though families with older children who don't mind a bit of rough ground will enjoy the adventure. The structure itself isn't fenced, so keep little ones close. Allow half an hour for the walk up and some time to soak up the views.

From the various camping spots around Much Wenlock - Sytche Caravan & Camping Park is practically on the doorstep - this makes a decent morning expedition before exploring the town's medieval streets. It's free, always open, and parking near the base of the hill is straightforward enough.
