Much Wenlock

Stone walls line the narrow lanes leading into this medieval market town, where Olympic dreams were born in the Victorian era. Much Wenlock feels properly old - not the chocolate-box prettiness some Shropshire towns go for, but genuine weathered limestone that's seen eight centuries of market days. Dr William Penny Brookes gets the credit for founding the modern Olympics here, though locals will tell you he was building on traditions much older than that.

Holy Trinity Church dominates the town centre, its Norman arches competing for attention with Much Wenlock Museum just up the road. The museum's small but packed with local finds - Roman coins from Yarchester and medieval bits that make you realise this place was important when London was still a muddy backwater. St. Mary's Church offers quieter contemplation if the main drag gets too busy.

The surrounding countryside is proper walking country. The Wrekin looms to the northeast - a distinctive peak that's visible for miles and worth the climb for views across three counties. Closer to town, Little Hill and Overley Hill provide gentler rambles through Traps Coppice and Childe's Plantation, where ancient woodlands hide old Lime Kiln workings.

Getting here's straightforward enough - the town sits between Bridgnorth and Shrewsbury on the A458, with decent bus links to both. Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes perfect sense. You're close enough to walk into town for a proper pub lunch, but far enough out to appreciate the peace when day-trippers head home. Spring Field Dark Skies Eco Camp particularly suits those wanting to stargaze after dark - light pollution's minimal once you're outside the town centre.
