Oldbury Castle Hillfort

The walk up to Oldbury Castle is steep enough to get your heart going, but the reward is a proper Iron Age hillfort with genuine teeth to it. You're looking at impressive earthwork ramparts that still command the landscape near Devizes after all these centuries, with views that stretch across Wiltshire in ways that make the huffing worthwhile.

What makes Oldbury different from some of the more manicured hillforts is that it feels genuinely wild. The ditches are deep, the banks are substantial, and you can actually read the defensive strategy in the contours - multiple ramparts layered to slow down attackers. It's the kind of place where you stand and think about Iron Age life rather than just tick a box.

Historically minded types will get the most from it. Kids under ten might find it a bit abstract - fields with bumps aren't always thrilling unless you're seriously into archaeology. The walk itself is manageable but not trivial; allow an hour return trip from the base depending on your pace.

There's no visitor infrastructure to speak of, so it's properly free and unspoilt. Go early morning or late afternoon when the light catches the ramparts and you've got the place to yourself. It pairs nicely with a stay at Little Owls Camping just down the road, which gives you a good base for exploring the Devizes area without fighting for car parks. The hill's accessible year-round, though winter when the trees are bare gives you better sight lines across the fortifications.
