Oldchapel Hill

Getting up Oldchapel Hill rewards you with proper views across the Powys moorland - the kind of vista that makes the climb worthwhile. It's not a dramatic peak by any stretch, but from Llanidloes it's an accessible walk that takes you away from the town quickly enough. The summit itself is unremarkable - no cairn, no shelter, just open ground and the feeling of being properly in the Mid Wales hills.

This is walker territory rather than casual tourist stuff. You need decent boots and an hour or so to make the ascent and get back down. The moorland around here can be boggy depending on weather, so go after dry spells if you can. There's something satisfying about peaks that don't require technical skill or special equipment - just legs and a map.

Staying in the area, you've got several camping and glamping options within easy reach. Ty Llewelyn's just 1.5 miles away if you want to base yourself nearby, with Dol-Llys Farm and Red Kite Touring Park also close at hand. These work better than trying to do it as a day trip from further afield. The walk fits nicely into a Mid Wales rambling holiday where you're mixing proper hill days with time in Llanidloes itself - there's enough going on in the town to break up the walking.

Winter visibility can be rough up here, so spring through early autumn is your window. Free to walk, obviously. Allow a couple of hours total.
