Olderfleet Castle (State Care Monument)

The ruins stand on a rocky outcrop just south of Larne, commanding the narrow strait between the Irish mainland and Islandmagee. Olderfleet Castle is a modest fortification, but its position tells the real story - this was a serious defence point, built to watch over one of the busiest sea routes in medieval times. What you get is a squat tower that's seen better centuries, ringed by crumbling walls and enough atmosphere to make the walk worthwhile.

History buffs will genuinely appreciate this one. The castle dates from the 1177s when Norman strongmen were busy stamping their authority across Ulster. Standing here, you understand immediately why they chose this spot - nothing gets past without being seen. The views across the water toward Islandmagee are proper dramatic, especially on a clear day when the light hits the stone just right.

It's a short visit, maybe thirty minutes tops, and completely free to wander around since it's in State Care. There's no visitor infrastructure, no cafe, no Gift Shop of Eternal Disappointment. Just the ruins and the wind and the history. It's not a destination in itself, but if you're staying at Down to Earth Wild Camping nearby, or exploring the Larne area, it's absolutely worth the detour. Families with older kids who can manage rough ground will find it interesting; young children might get bored quickly. Go when the weather's decent - exposed position means it can get bleak in rain.
