Osea beach huts

The colourful beach huts along Osea Island are the sort of thing you see in postcards and assume won't live up to the hype in person. They do, though. Lined up in a proper row - pastel blues, pinks, yellows, and greens - they're genuinely photogenic, especially on a clear day when the light hits them just right.

This is old-school Essex seaside charm, the kind of place where families have owned the same hut for decades. You can't rent them for the day, mind you. They're private property, so you're really here to walk, take pictures, and soak in the atmosphere rather than claim one as your own. The beach itself is pebbly and muddy in patches - not dramatic, but it has character. Head down in the afternoon when the light's golden and you'll understand why people bother.

It's a 20-minute walk from Maldon, which is worth knowing. If you're staying at Osea Leisure Park or Mill Beach Seaside Resort just down the road, this is an easy morning stroll with your camera. Hoe Mill Lock, a few miles inland, offers a different sort of outing if you want to vary your days. The beach huts themselves won't keep you occupied for hours - an hour at most if you're leisurely - but they're the kind of spot that rewards a wander rather than a rushed visit. Go when you're not expecting perfection and you'll find it.
