Oughtonhead Common Nature Reserve

The chalk streams running through Oughtonhead Common are the real draw here - crystal-clear water that actually looks like something from a postcard, not murky like most English waterways. It's a proper nature reserve just east of Hitchin, the sort of place where you'll spot kingfishers if you're quiet enough and lucky enough. The walking tracks meander through wet meadow and woodland, taking maybe an hour to do properly without rushing.

It's free to visit, which is genuinely excellent. You're looking at a couple of kilometres of easy paths - nothing strenuous, though some bits get boggy depending on the season. Spring and early summer are best; the wildflowers make it actually worth the trip. Winter's fine too if you don't mind damp feet.

Walkers and bird watchers will properly rate this. Families with younger kids might find it a touch samey after half an hour - there's no playground or café, just nature. If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan sites like Jacks Hill or Radwell Lake, it's worth a morning visit to stretch the legs. It slots nicely into a wider Hitchin area outing - the town itself has decent high street shops and pubs worth exploring afterwards.

The real value here is that it's underfussy and ungimmicky. No visitor centre, no entrance fee, no nonsense. Just come, walk, watch for wildlife. That's increasingly rare.
