St Michael Mount

The hilltop church of St Michael Mount rises above the Hertfordshire countryside just east of Hitchin, commanding views across the chalk landscape that stretch for miles on a clear day. It's genuinely worth the climb - the path up is steep enough to earn your leg muscles' respect, but the reward is a proper Anglo-Saxon foundation topped with medieval stonework and that unmistakable Essex air of having seen centuries pass without fussing about it.

Inside, it's modest rather than grand. You'll find the standard church fixtures - ancient fonts, memorial brasses, the sort of things that matter deeply if you're into ecclesiastical history, less so if you're after dramatic architecture. The real draw is the walk itself and that panoramic view from the churchyard. Walkers will make a decent morning of it from Hitchin town. Families with primary-age kids will manage it fine; teenagers might find the interior a bit sparse unless they're genuinely interested in medieval churches.

Timing-wise, give yourself an hour including the climb and a proper look around. There's no entry fee that I'm aware of - you just walk up and get on with it. The surrounding countryside works well with a broader Hertfordshire tour, and if you're basing yourself at one of the nearby parks like Radwell Lake or Henlow Bridge Lakes, it's a straightforward afternoon excursion. Go when the weather's decent. The views won't happen on a wet Tuesday in November.
