Our Lady Star of the Sea

The cathedral sits bang in the centre of Downpatrick, impossible to miss with its twin spires cutting into the sky. Our Lady Star of the Sea is a proper Catholic cathedral - all soaring stone and stained glass, the kind of place that makes you catch your breath when you walk through the doors. It's been here since the 1880s, built in a Gothic revival style that feels grand without being showy.

Inside, there's real craftsmanship on display: ornate ceilings, decent mosaics, and windows that flood the space with coloured light when the sun's out. If you're into ecclesiastical architecture or have a genuine interest in Northern Irish religious history, you'll find something worthwhile. That said, it's not a place to spend hours. Most people give it twenty to thirty minutes, which is about right.

It works well as part of a Downpatrick wander - the town's got the abbey ruins and the Downpatrick Head heritage site nearby if you want to make a proper morning of it. The cathedral itself is free to enter, though opening times aren't reliably advertised online, so ring ahead or check when you arrive. Both Edgewater and Coneyisland caravan parks sit close by - less than two miles away - making this an easy stop if you're based at either one for a week.

Families with young kids might find it a bit solemn unless there's a service on. But if you're the type who enjoys period architecture and don't mind a quiet interior, it's worth the five minutes from the car park.
