Ouse Valley Park

The Ouse Valley stretches across Northamptonshire with a quiet dignity that most visitors heading down the M1 completely miss. This isn't a theme park or a visitor centre - it's a proper river valley where you can walk for miles along decent towpaths, spot water voles if you're lucky, and actually hear yourself think.

The appeal here is straightforward. Walkers get a gentle, well-maintained route following the Great Ouse itself, with the landscape shifting from open meadow to wooded sections depending on where you pick up the trail. The water itself is the main event - you'll see narrowboats puttering past, fishermen camped out for the day, and occasionally a flash of kingfisher if conditions are right. It's the sort of place where an hour turns into three without you noticing.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after a while - there aren't dramatic viewpoints or ruins to clamber over, just consistent, pleasant walking. But for anyone after a proper countryside walk within striking distance of Milton Keynes, this delivers without fuss.

The nearby campsite options are decent. Cosgrove Park sits practically on your doorstep at less than a mile away, making it an obvious base. Gullivers is a few miles out but rated higher if you want something with more on-site activities. The Home Farm CL offers a quieter, more traditional camping experience if you're after that.

Going midweek in spring or early autumn beats summer weekends, when the towpath gets busier.
