Outer Harbour

Fishing boats bob gently against weathered pontoons while gulls wheel overhead, calling to each other across the water. Outer Harbour in Burry Port isn't the flashiest marina you'll ever visit, but there's something properly Welsh about its unpretentious character. The working boats here tell the story of a community that still earns its living from the sea, rather than just playing on it.

Walking along the harbour wall gives you decent views across Carmarthen Bay, though don't expect anything too dramatic. It's more about the everyday rhythm of a fishing port - nets being mended, catches being landed, locals having a chat by the quayside. Kids might enjoy watching the boats come and go, but this isn't a theme park. An hour is probably enough unless you're properly into maritime life.

The harbour works well as part of a coastal holiday in the area. You're just a short walk from Burry Port town centre, and it makes a nice change of pace if you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Pembrey Country Park Caravan site or Parkdean's Carmarthen Bay Holiday Park. Bring a jacket - the wind off the water can be sharp even on mild days.
