Sandy Water Park

The lake at Sandy Water Park sits just outside Burry Port, a proper working-class coastal town that doesn't pretend to be anything it isn't. It's a freshwater lake - the sort of place locals bring their kids on a Sunday afternoon, not somewhere you'd drive an hour out of your way for unless you're already camping nearby.

What you get is a modest body of water surrounded by rough grassland and reedy banks. Fishing's the main draw here - coarse fishing types seem to know about it, though you'll want to check on permits and season dates before heading down. A decent walk around the perimeter if you fancy it, nothing strenuous, maybe thirty minutes at a stroll. The views aren't dramatic - it's Carmarthenshire, not Snowdonia - but there's something calming about it on a quiet morning.

Families with young kids might spend an hour here maximum. Older children interested in wildlife could occupy themselves longer, spotting birds and whatever else frequents the reeds. It's genuinely free to visit and wander, though facilities are minimal - no café, no visitor centre, just a car park and open access.

If you're staying at Gateway Resort or Shoreline Caravan Park just down the road, it's worth a walk to stretch the legs. Combine it with a proper look at Burry Port itself - small harbour, decent chippy, actual character. For something with more teeth, Pembrey Country Park is only five miles away and offers far more in terms of activities and infrastructure. Sandy Water Park works as a quiet add-on, not a destination.
