Ovenstone Plantation

The woodland at Ovenstone Plantation spreads across a decent stretch of Northumberland countryside just south of Morpeth, and it's the sort of place that rewards a proper walk rather than a quick leg-stretch. Conifers dominate - mainly spruce and pine - which means the forest floor stays relatively dry underfoot even after rain, and the canopy's thick enough that you won't get soaked in a shower. It's genuinely quiet in there. You'll hear birdsong, the occasional rustle of wildlife, and not much else.

What you're really here for is the walking. The plantation works well as part of a longer route through the local area rather than a destination in itself - it's ideal if you're based at Whitton Glebe or Riverside Rothbury and fancy a half-day outing on foot. Expect mixed-quality tracks, some quite boggy in places, and you'll want proper boots. The views aren't dramatic - this isn't moorland - but the sense of getting properly away from things is very real.

Historians might find it mildly interesting that this is working forestry rather than ancient woodland, but walkers and people after a bit of peace will get more from it. The nearest town Morpeth is close enough that you could combine this with a visit to the high street if you need supplies. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you're doing a decent circuit. No facilities on-site that I can find, so bring water and sort yourself out before you arrive.
