Oxwich Bay

Three miles of golden sand stretch between limestone headlands, creating one of Gower's finest beaches. The bay curves gracefully from Oxwich Point to Nicholaston Burrows, backed by sand dunes and woodland that feel properly wild despite the car park tucked behind the trees.

Families will find this a cracking spot for a full day out. The sand shelves gently into relatively calm water, perfect for children, while rock pools at either end keep young explorers busy for hours. Serious walkers can tackle the coast path to Three Cliffs Bay - a spectacular but demanding trek that takes about 90 minutes each way.

What sets Oxwich apart from other Gower beaches is the nature reserve behind the dunes. Freshwater marshes and ancient woodland create an unusual landscape where you might spot herons, kingfishers and even otters if you're lucky. The ruins of a 12th-century castle perch on the eastern headland, though honestly there's not much left to see.

Parking costs a few pounds and fills up quickly on sunny weekends, so arrive early or late afternoon. The beach cafe does decent fish and chips, though it's nothing fancy. With holiday parks like Oxwich Camping Park and Three Cliffs Bay Holiday Park within easy reach, this makes an excellent base for exploring the wider Gower Peninsula.
