West Tor

Limestone cliffs drop dramatically into the Bristol Channel from this elevated promontory on the Gower Peninsula. West Tor sits above Rhossili Bay, offering sweeping views across to Devon's coastline on clear days and down to Worm's Head - that famous tidal island that looks like a sleeping dragon. The walk up from Rhossili village takes about twenty minutes through sheep-grazed clifftop grassland, with the path well-defined but occasionally boggy after rain.

Walkers and photographers will find this spot particularly rewarding. The light changes constantly here, especially in late afternoon when the limestone glows golden against the deep blue sea. Families with older children should manage the ascent fine, though the clifftop drops are steep and unfenced - definitely one to keep little ones close.

Timing matters considerably. Summer brings crowds to nearby Rhossili Beach, but the tor itself rarely feels busy. Winter visits can be spectacular when Atlantic storms roll in, though wrap up warm - the wind cuts right through you up here. Allow an hour for the round trip from Rhossili car park, longer if you're planning to explore the headland properly.

Staying at nearby sites like Three Cliffs Bay Holiday Park or Oxwich Camping Park puts you within easy reach of some of Britain's finest coastal walking. This tor makes an excellent starting point for the longer trek out to Worm's Head at low tide.
